WHAT A SMALL GROUP TOUR TO CUBA FROM THE U.S. IS LIKE

Back from a small group tour of Cuba. Here’s what it was like.

Getting to Cuba from the U.S. for U.S. citizens

U.S. citizens must have a passport with 6 months minimum validity. They must have a “Cuban visa” also referred to as a Cuban tourist card. This can be purchased on line or at the airport before the flight to Cuba.

Many U.S. airlines fly to Cuba direct including American, United, Southwest, JetBlue and others. There are many daily direct flights form Miami. Flight time is less than one hour.

All U.S. citizens must select one of 12 U.S. government approved categories for travel to Cuba. Most choose the “Support for the Cuban People” option. This option allows for homestays/B&Bs and meals at private enterprise restaurants, both of which are common.

Visitors must also engage in meaningful interaction with the Cuban people. This can be: conversations with a local tour guide, meals at private restaurants, using private taxis, conversations with local artists, street vendors or artisans and the like. Plain tourism is prohibited by U.S. law.
